Measles, also called rubeola, is a highly contagious virus. People with measles spread the virus through the air when they cough, sneeze, or breathe. This page connects you to trusted information and explains when to call the Health Department or healthcare provider.

PROTECTION AGAINST MEASLES

Most people are protected through the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccination. However, outbreaks still occur as unvaccinated travelers come back to the U.S. from places where measles is still common. People who are not fully vaccinated or who have never had measles are at risk of becoming infected.

CDC considers you protected from measles if you have written documentation (records) showing at least one of the following:

You received two doses of measles-containing vaccine, and you are a(n)
- school-aged child (grades K-12)
- adult who will be in a setting that poses a high risk for measles transmission, including students at post-high school education institutions, healthcare personnel, and international travelers.
You received one dose of measles-containing vaccine, and you are a(n) —
- preschool-aged child
- adult who will not be in a high-risk setting for measles transmission.
A laboratory confirmed that you had measles at some point in your life.
A laboratory confirmed that you are immune to measles.
You were born before 1957. You are presumed to be protected against measles. Before vaccines were available, nearly everyone was infected with measles during childhood and developed protective, lifelong immunity.

HOW DO I GET A COPY OF MY SHOT RECORD?

The Health Department uses the North Carolina Immunization Registry. Most healthcare providers across North Carolina can access immunization records through this system.
If you received an immunization through the Health Department or a WASH Clinic, you were provided a certified copy of your record at the time of your visit. If you need a replacement copy, records may be requested in person during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Please bring a valid photo ID.
Parents or legal guardians may request immunization records for children and teens under 18 years of age.

DO I NEED A BOOSTER VACCINE?

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes, and a rash. Symptoms usually appear 7 to 14 days after exposure, but can appear up to 21 days later. The rash often begins on the face and spreads downward. Symptoms may last one to two weeks.

Measles can be serious at any age. Children under 5 years old, pregnant individuals, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness and complications. In some cases, measles can lead to pneumonia, swelling of the brain, or death, though severe outcomes are uncommon.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE SYMPTOMS OR HAVE BEEN EXPOSED?

If you have measles symptoms or believe you may have been exposed, call before visiting your healthcare provider, the Health Department, an urgent care center, or an emergency department. Let them know about your symptoms or possible exposure so they can guide next steps safely.

A healthcare provider can:

Review your vaccination history or other records to determine whether you are protected against measles
Make special arrangements to evaluate you, if needed, while reducing the risk of exposure to other patients and staff

SCHEDULE A MEASLES VACCINE

The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and is the best protection against measles.

1 dose is about 93% effective.
2 doses are about 97% effective.
Most people who receive two doses are protected for life and do not need a booster.

Vaccines are thoroughly tested, and serious side effects are extremely rare. Millions of children are safely vaccinated each year. When measles occurs in vaccinated individuals, illness is usually much milder with a lower risk of complications.
